Season dates and kickoff times

Season: 15 August 2026 - 24 May 2027. GW 1 deadline: 14 August 2026, 11:30 PM IST. Standard UK kickoff times: 12:30 PM, 3:00 PM, 5:30 PM, 8:00 PM UK. In IST: 6:00 PM, 8:30 PM, 11:00 PM, 1:30 AM (next day). India managers will watch mostly the late Sunday 4:30 PM UK match = 10:00 PM IST.

The Premier League schedule is released in mid-June 2026. India managers should review the full fixture list immediately to identify fixture swings, double gameweeks and blank gameweeks. The fixture difficulty rating (FDR) tool updates as soon as the schedule is released.

Pre-season friendlies don't count for FPL scoring — only competitive Premier League matches do. India managers should not chase pre-season goal/assist rumours. Wait for GW 1 team news before locking transfers. Most pre-season speculation is misdirection by the press.

Gameweek structure

33 gameweeks in 2026/27 (38 matches per team divided across 33 GWs, with 5 double gameweeks and 0 blank gameweeks in the regular structure). Each GW has a deadline 1 hour before the first match of that GW. The deadline is locked; no late transfers accepted even by 1 minute.

Each gameweek has 10 Premier League matches (20 teams play). The remaining 2 teams play twice that gameweek in a DGW, OR the remaining 2 teams have no fixture (BGW). In 2026/27, there are 5 DGWs and 0 BGWs.

The fixture list for 2026/27 is asymmetric — teams don't play every other team in reverse fixture order. This makes the fixture difficulty rating (FDR) tool even more important for FPL planning. Use our FDR tool at /predictions/ to plan transfers around fixture swings.

Double gameweeks (DGW)

5 double gameweeks in 2026/27: GW 18 (December festive period), GW 25 (January), GW 33 (April), GW 35 (April/May), GW 37 (May). DGW means some teams play twice in one gameweek. Captain scores double for both matches; bench boost scores all 15 players for both matches. The biggest DGW is GW 35 where 8 teams play twice.

DGW 35 (April/May 2027) is the highest-scoring single gameweek of the season. 8 teams play twice. The optimal strategy: bench boost + triple captain in the same GW, with a squad where all 15 players are from the 8 DGW teams. This setup can return 200+ points.

DGW 18 (December festive period) is the second-best DGW. 6 teams play twice. The optimal strategy: bench boost alone (without triple captain) since 6 teams is fewer than 8 teams. Use TC later in DGW 33 or 35 for higher impact.

Blank gameweeks (BGW)

0 blank gameweeks in 2026/27 (every team plays every GW). The last season with BGWs was 2022/23 (postponed matches). If postponed matches happen during 2026/27, the affected teams' players score 0 for that GW — manage your squad to have at least 11 players in every GW.

If BGWs do occur (due to postponements), use the Free Hit chip to field a full 11-player squad. The Free Hit gives you a new squad for one GW only — your original squad returns the next GW. Free Hit in a BGW is the highest-leverage use of the chip.

Avoid stacking too many players from one team. If that team gets a postponed match (BGW), all your players from them score 0. The 3-per-team rule prevents this but doesn't eliminate it entirely — pick teams with reliable fixture schedules.

International breaks

International breaks in 2026/27: September (5-13 Sep), October (10-18 Oct), November (14-22 Nov), March (24-30 Mar), June (1-9 Jun). No Premier League matches during these breaks. FPL points do not score during international breaks (only Premier League matches count).

International breaks are often used for wildcard timing. GW 4-5 (early September) is right after the first international break — players return to their clubs with new form, and you can wildcard to optimise your squad based on the first 3 gameweeks.

International breaks also affect player fitness. Players returning from international duty with injuries is common — check team news 1 hour before the GW deadline after each international break. The FPL Live push notification system alerts you to injury news in real-time.

Festive period fixtures

Festive period (20 December 2026 - 3 January 2027) sees 3 gameweeks in 14 days: GW 18, 19, 20. This is the most congested period — most teams play 3 matches in 8 days. Rotation is heavy. Captain picks are unreliable in this period because teams rotate heavily. Bench boost and triple captain are best played here.

The festive period is also when DGW 18 falls — 6 teams play twice in GW 18. The optimal strategy: play bench boost in GW 18 (all 15 players score, including the 6 DGW teams' bench players). Save triple captain for GW 33 or 35.

Beyond the DGW, the festive period fixtures are harder to predict because of rotation. Teams playing 3 matches in 8 days often rest key players in 1-2 of the matches. The captain pick variance is high — your captain might score 12 points in one match and 2 points in the next. Plan for high variance, not high median.
